Will You Hullabaloo?

I’m still vibrating from all the great music I enjoyed last weekend but already I’ve got my sights set on another live music event. This weekend (August 16-18) I’m hitting the road to experience my first Hullabaloo in Perth-Andover. This is the 6th year for the Larlee Creek Hullabaloo festival and it boosts “An eclectic mix of the finest in East Coast musicans!” I’ve heard so many good things about the collaboration of the musicians and the super friendly setting. A good friend of mine, who follows the music scene pretty close, has said “They program top-notch East Coast talent and have a knack for picking East Coast Music Award winning acts a year or two before they’re nominated” I’m happy I fit this into my summer plans this year. Friday provides us a rare opportunity to catch Fredericton’s own Sleepy Driver

Saturday is full of great talent including The Backyard Devils who are just back from France and will no doubt still be flying high from their success. And its been way too long since I got me a fix of Matt Andersen’s monster playing.

And yet another super talented band hailing from Fredericton, Olympic Symphonium will ease us into Sunday with their “bittersweet melodies, soaring harmonies, and an awful lot of passion“

Be sure to look me up if you make it to Perth too. It will surely be a great time!

FredRock in the rain & Poltz untamed!

I had a fantastic night of music!

I am happy I didn’t let the rain stop me from getting over to FredRock to experience first hand some great bands who are new to me. Despite the rain Wildlife played an energetic set and were hitting the road immediately to make it to Kingston, ON for tomorrow nights show. Safe travels! Hollerado was tight and having fun. I was really touched by the meaning behind their new song “So it goes”. Check out the video to get the story and see how forgiveness and compassion has such lasting effects.

Classified killed it and had the crowd screaming for more. The Tea Party gave all they had to give regardless of it being “the wettest gig on the history of our band”. Tomorrow is promising better weather and there is lots more music to be had! I’d like to mention the sound quality was top notch – kudos to the sound crew! And can I suggest you stop by Mama’s Pub booth on the grounds to get some good grub while you are on site.

And in the middle of all the fun being had at the Loyalist Rugby Field, I made my way over to the Cedar Tree Café for the Steve Poltz show. I don’t remember the last time I have been so thoroughly entertained! I had seen Steve a few years back at StanFest and enjoyed his show but this was even better than I’d remembered. My cheeks hurt from laughing at the stories he told and he has the ability to write a song which is both hilarious and heartbreaking simultaneously.

some of his lyrics: I want all my friends to know one thing, that one day when I’m long dead and gone, I want them to know that I love them and that’s why I wrote them this song. Because I want all my friends to be happy. I want all my friends to find love. I want all my friends to share good things and to be blessed by the light from above.

Its hard to know how to best describe him or his style but this comes close (taken from the web) “His performances are maniacal, frenzied and kinetic affairs tempered with melodic tunes and powerful guitar work. He co-wrote Jewel‘s big hit “I was meant for you” and of course has a great story to tell about the circumstances under which they wrote that song. He has a song “Everything about you” on the soundtrack for the movie Notting Hill. Neil Young loves his 45 second songs! He is amazing at improvisation and delighted us with a song inspired by one of the paintings on the wall and another time went all techno with an improv song using his looper and distortion mic. And don’t even get me started on Sewing Machine! Just be sure you request it when you see him. He performed a beautiful version of Moonriver and dedicated it to his mother. He closed out the show with Bob Dylan’s Forever Young with the crowd enthusiastically singing along and I wanted to cry because my heart was so full! He loves what he does and we are fortunate to be able to share in it even a little bit.

SO MUCH MUSIC THIS WEEKEND…

I know I’ll be going straight out to try and catch as much music as possible this weekend. It means criss-crossing the city a few times but its gonna be worth it! Where will I see you?

Tomorrow night FredRock starts at the Northside Rugby grounds and runs 3 nights – Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check out this lineup!

Also tomorrow night (Friday) Steve Poltz is playing at Cedar Tree Café. I’ve seen this guy a couple times at Stan Rogers Folk Festival and he is a great entertainer. Don’t miss your chance to experience his live show for yourself!

Saturday afternoon, in Officers’ Square, The Belle Comedians will delight you with their sounds between 1:00-2:00pm. Keep your fingers crossed for dry weather!

Saturday night the Fredericton Playhouse is the place to find the legendary Steve Earle and the Dukes . I first saw Steve perform solo in support of his album Jerusalem, second time I saw him was at the Playhouse 2 years ago with a full band. In both cases I was sufficiently impressed! He is an incredible songwriter and has no problem articulating himself and sharing his opinions. I assume he enjoyed his time at the Playhouse as much as I did and that’s why he’s back!

And that is just some of the music happening around town. Be sure to check out the blog calendar to see what else is happening. Its a perfect weekend to get out there – the city is offering up folk, roots, rock’n’roll, metal and more!

I’d also like to wish everyone at Messtival and Lunenburg Folk Festival a super great weekend too!

Nashwaak MusicFest kicks off tomorrow!

The long weekend in August is a great time to fill up on great music & outdoor living and the Nashwaak MusicFest is ready to fix you up with all that and more! The music starts tomorrow night (Friday) and won’t stop until late Sunday night. The Artist’s Village and Kids Corner will be set up and the camping is free. Tickets still available at the gate. My post on the Fredericton Tourism blog gives an overview (click here) and the Festival website (click here) will give you all the details you need.
