JAZZ RETURNS TO POPULAR FREDERICTON VENUE

For two nights over the coming months a local venue, once considered the local hub for Fredericton’s jazz scene, will once again come alive with two exciting artists passing through the city.

The Bobak Room in The Delta Fredericton – formerly known as the popular, and scenic, DJ Purdy’s – will be hosting two vibrant evenings of jazz, its first in over two decades, as the MRTI Agency, in partnership with the Delta Fredericton, presents the ‘Jazz at Purdy’s’ series.

On February 15th, Fredericton native Geordie Haley returns home for a triumphant performance of exciting improvisation and exploration to kick it off.  Haley will be joined by a seasoned combo of local talent, including Jason Flores (double bass), Karl Ganz (drums) and Mike Doherty (keys). The homecoming has allowed Haley a chance to reflect.

“Back in the day, I found myself lucky to have a gig that lasted three nights a week at DJ Purdy’s. That’s practically unheard of these days. We were able to work on our jazz playing in a friendly place with the beautiful Saint John River floating by,” added Haley.

Second up, on April 4th, Cuban jazz powerhouse Dee Hernandez adds her high-energy, global rhythms to the Jazz at Purdy’s series, and she has requested a dance floor! Hernandez was recently given the title of ‘the voice of Canadian-Cuban jazz’ by Maritime Edit magazine, and has been described as a ‘force of artistic innovation and musical freedom’ and her talents have been featured prominently on national specialty jazz programs and formats.

The new layout of the room will be adorned with cabaret style seating and will be tastefully lit for the perfect ambience, making it ideal for a night of jazz.

Tickets for both shows are currently on sale through Ticket Tailor – http://tinyurl.com/cfdpry4j.
$20 advance or $25 at the door. Doors will open at 6:30 with shows starting at 7PM. Nice & early to allow for everyone to participate.

Jazz at Purdy’s with Dee Hernandez

Cuban jazz is hot, and the artist we have coming into the Delta Fredericton’s DJ Purdy’s this spring promises to bring even more of that heat. April 4th, come out to enjoy the Cuban roots, jazz and global rhythms of the incendiary Dee Hernandez Band.

This NB based artist has been converting new fans all over with her unique brand of Latin fire. Her efforts have resulted in ECMA and MusicNB nominations and CBC support–both regionally and nationally. Canadian artist Sass Jordan declared Dee a ‘world class jazz singer’, while Maritime Edit magazine called her ‘the voice of Cuban-Canadian jazz’.

Hernandez’s performances have been called a vibrant mix of energy, enchanting vocals and infectious Cuban rhythms. This show is a must see for anyone who needs to get out and ‘shake it’ for a couple of hours. What a way to welcome in the warmer weather of spring!

Jazz at Purdy’s with Geordie Haley and Friends

Guitarist and composer…teacher and improviser…Geordie Haley returns to where it all began for him musically when he comes home in February for a highly anticipated return to the Delta Fredericton, where he has performed many times throughout his colorful and creative career as one of Canada’s most respected jazz guitar players.

Whether it’s exploring various jazz forms or experiments in modern classical themes through electronic sounds, Haley’s seamless connection of all these influences have allowed him to come up with his own unique style and voice through his instrument.

Joining Haley for this incredible night of music will be notable local musicians Michael Doherty on keys, Jason Flores on bass, and Karl Gans hits the kit, so you’re guaranteed a night of premiere musicianship while experiencing a true homecoming for one of Fredericton’s finest musical sons.

Making this night even more special is, of course, the venue itself. For many years DJ Purdy’s was Fredericton’s unofficial home for jazz music, so to see these performers return to light up this particular stage, makes this gig extra special for jazz lovers in the city.

Theresa Malenfant & Scott Medford (Saint John)

ECMA winner Theresa Malenfant and renowned guitarist Scott Medford have become one of the most popular blues duo acts in the Atlantic Provinces. They have been performing together in a band for years, but decided to work as a duo only 6 years ago. In that short time they managed to win second place in an International Blues Challenge (IBC) held in Memphis Tennessee.

Theresa and Scott have an intuitive way of working with each other, and the mutual respect and admiration for the other’s abilities is evident from their stage performance.

Theresa Malenfant has earned the nickname “Queen Bee of the Blues”. When you hear the first note you’ll know why. And she personally selected Scott Medford to be her guitarist. That speaks volumes about his level of playing.

An incredible evening of music you’ll not soon forget!
