The Jack Show: Songwriter’s Circle, Saturday, September 27th

The Jack Show is New Brunswick’s ultimate men’s lifestyle show built on one simple objective: to bring everything guys love under one roof for one weekend.

The musical portion of the weekend will see Music Runs Through It (aka me!) hosting the Songwriter’s Circle on the Saturday afternoon (September 27th) between 3-5PM.

We will be presenting four fantastic local singer-songwriter’s in this up close and personal setting. Peter Hicks, Juanita Bourque, Mark Roberts and John Myshrall will share insight into their songs and invite us to experience the music in a more intimate way.

Peter Hicks is the songwriter behind Sleepy Driver bringing his many influences to the Americana Roots Rockin’ style of the band. On Sleepy’s latest album, entitled Ignatius, the songs circle dark territory with cautious optimism: tales of love, loss, and things gone wrong, hard times tinted by glimmers of hope.


Juanita Bourque is a founding member of Sissy & the Hobos and she’ll impress you with her powerful voice as well as her songwriting.  Juanita’s collaboration on Sleepy Driver‘s latest album is an example of how well the local music network supports each others projects.

John Myshrall

 

John Myshrall is one of the lead singers with the band Flat Top and is well known for his song Millville Sun. His songwriting covers many subjects and can be delivered both sweetly or comically. His appearance at the songwriter’s circle is a rare occurrence so don’t miss your chance!

 

 

Mark Roberts is well known as the morning DJ on the FOX radio station and as the host of  The East Coast Music Show but did you know that he is also a great songwriter? Marks album, Kids from the Shore has received great critical acclaim and he & his band, The Shore Road Drifters, continue to play music festivals and  shows while working on their next album.

This stellar line-up is sure to impress the audience and to provide us all with an afternoon of great stories & sound!

HARVEST JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL 2014! Are you ready??

“The Best International Festival Experience on Canada’s East Coast!”

The tents are up in downtown Fredericton and the excitement is definitely in the air! I spent some time this afternoon with the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival Volunteer Committee folding t shirts in preparation for this weeks big event. It would probably surprise most people to know that the Harvest has approximately 1,200 volunteers to prepare for! That takes a tremendous amount of coordinating and a whole lot of effort! I am amazed at the dedication of so many volunteers to make this event happen in such a fantastic way each year for 24 years now. Please be sure to thank all the volunteers you see this week – they will be wearing their green or purple t shirts! Without them we just wouldn’t have this much fun every September!

As a way of getting ready for the very full week ahead, I want to share as much information in one place as possible to make sure you are on top of your game. This will involve a lot of ‘click‘ options  so here we go…

Enjoy all things local this weekend at the NB Fine Craft festival!

craft councilNB Crafts Council is hosting their Fine Crafts Festival in Officers’ Square (downtown Fredericton) August 29-31

This will mark the 50th Anniversary of the New Brunswick Crafts Councils Fine Crafts Festival and features original works by award winning NB crafts people. They invite you to discover for yourself locally made craft including pottery, jewelry, sculpture, glassware, and wood. The festival will also feature live art demonstrations, live performances from local musicians, a kids craft corner, local food vendors, henna and face painting, and a beer garden sponsored by Picaroons.

Locally made crafts! Locally made food! Locally made beer! and local musicians (& a couple from a ways)! 

The festival runs Friday, August 29 from 12 noon – 7PM, Saturday, August 30 from 10AM-7PM, and Sunday, August 31 from 11AM-5PM in Officers’ Square. Admission is $3 (free for children under 12)

Sugarbomb is a local favourite and they don’t play often so I’d suggest you don’t miss the 6-piece musical party with a mission to bring about the joyful revival of Motown & Soul.

and check out the bio for Pat LePoidevin who describes his style as ‘looped orchestra of folk’: …uses a looper pedal to create a blend of sound using guitar, ukuleles, percussion, violin, and his notable deep melodic vocals. Carefully capturing one instrument at a time, he creates a complex multi-layered orchestra of folk. LePoidevin has toured Canada vigorously, making it sure that his sound of space-traveling wolves and mountain men is heard throughout the country.

Looks like a pretty good way to spend some time this long weekend! Get yourself downtown and wander through the exhibits, grab a bite of something delicious, enjoy a local brew and give a listen to some fine music!
