Sleepy Driver celebrating a decade of making music!

1964829_10153138003373363_5818078596462252079_nFredericton’s own Sleepy Driver will deliver a special show to celebrate the 10 years they have been making music together. The full band does not perform often so their fans know not to miss an opportunity to see them live. Members include Barry Hughes (drums & vocals), Mike Hatheway (bass), John Heinstein (keys), Ethan Young-Lai (guitar), Peter Hicks (vocals & guitar) and Dave Palmer (pedal steel).

I asked Peter what their fans can expect from the night?

Sleepy Driver has been at it for about ten years now, from being a humble three-piece combo all the way to the existing six-member band. Ten years is an accomplishment. We think that’s worth celebrating, and can’t think of a better way than to play our debut album ‘Steady Now‘ from start to finish. Largely because that’s what introduced most people to us. Of course we’ll also dig deep into our other albums. We’re also very proud to have to have Juanita Bourque join us on Friday. She’ll open the night with Shane Guitar then lend her voice to our set. It’s going to be a great night of music.”

The band has a solid foundation of songwriting and creates an alternative roots rock that is a formidable blend of college rock, blues, and old school country. Their sound is dark yet optimistic, gritty and honest with a healthy respect for tradition, full of dynamics, subtlety and noise.

According to the Facebook event this show is now SOLD OUT! and all indications lead me to think this event is something we will be talking about for a long time. I hope you were wise and picked up your tickets early!

See you at the James Joyce Pub!

Get your ‘folk rock’ fix at The Capital tomorrow night!

11193264_10155551889435424_1358246603423715008_nThe Young Novelists are once again playing their way through the maritimes  from Toronto and will take the stage at The Capital tomorrow night (Thursday, May 7) at 10PM. If you can’t make that show you should consider catching their show at the Roots & Soul Music Room on Friday night at 8PM.

I first saw the band playing Mama’s Pub about like 5 years ago and I was more than impressed with the songwriting and harmonies. Since then they’ve come back to Fredericton numerous times both as a duo and full band in different venues including a house concert and a sold out show at Roxstone Cafe.

CBC’s Bob Mersereau has prepared a great review of the band’s new album :

With James’ lyrics, there’s a strong emotional core that affects the listener on first listen, with all those communal themes. The folk nature of the group has grown closer to rock along the way too. “There is a part of me that likes to rock out,” admits James.

Click here to read Bob’s full review. When I contacted the band to see what the good people of Fredericton could expect from their show this was their response:

“Beards, plaid, & harmonies with an even mix of songs from the new album and the back catalogue, sing-alongs & stomping good times!”

How can you possibly resist that?!

Jerry-catch-all1Also on the bill at the Capital is Jerry Leger & the Situation in support of their album Early Riser produced by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. One of Jerry’s earliest supporters was Ron Sexsmith, who’s played piano on a couple previous albums including Some Folks Know which also featured a duet with Serena Ryder. I had not heard of him before but after seeing him at the Capital a while back I definitely won’t forget him.

I know it isn’t always easy to get out so late on a ‘work night’ but I think you’ll agree it was worth it on Friday 🙂

Dolan’s Pub – featured venue for March

Dolan'sMarch brings St. Patrick’s Day and Dolan’s Pub provides you a place to celebrate your Irish roots  – real or borrowed for the day! For that reason it is only right to feature Dolan’s this month.

The pub is well known for its fantastic staff and besides their tasty menu they serve up live music 4 nights a week!

Dolan’s has been owned since October 2010 by the Hughes family – Barry, Karen and Cyril. Barry is a well known drummer in Fredericton playing with Sleepy Driver and holding a beat at Wednesday’s jam night with The Dolans Late Night Orchestra. His candor & wit in answering our questions is greatly appreciated and provides some insight on what makes Dolan’s unique as a music venue.

Why do you feel it is important to offer the live music experience?
There is a special vibe when one sees a live band; especially a band playing recognizable tunes that everybody knows; they know the melody and lyrics and can sing along with the tune and feel like they’re contributing to the greatness of the night for everybody in the room; it’s a great thing to witness and I love that about Dolan’s Pub. The bands are all great entertainers and they include the crowd in the show as well and it’s a completely different experience for the customer than going to a club with a DJ. Live music is the reason the pub still exists and people from here to Ontario know we’re one of the best places to go in Eastern Canada to see a great band and have a dance or two.

How long have you been presenting live music? How do you decide who to book?
The pub has been around since 1994 and we’ve had live music since that time. I book bands that are not only talented but are good entertainers as well; I book bands that have fun on stage and not just showing up to play and get paid; I book bands that put on a show; they need to be professional in terms of appearance, production, reliability and they must have quality gear; they also must have a set-list that includes songs that people can dance and sing to.

Do you ever stray from the regular schedule?
On occasion, we will have an event on a Monday or Tuesday depending on the situation but for the most part, we stick to the Wednesday to Saturday schedule.

Which shows stand out as something special?
I love all of the shows; even though all bands play various versions of similar tunes, there is a unique aspect to each band that performs here. Some bands are heavier than others; some have a country-rock flair, some have a Celtic, more traditional twist but the various personalities of band members is what draws the folks in. They love the variety of music we offer here

Do you have a favourite band you like to present?
Just like my mom said to me “Barry, I have no favourite son as I love them all the same but you’re pretty special” I’m sure she uttered the exact same thing to my brothers.sham

Do you have any special events coming up?
I think every weekend is a special event here simply due to how wonderful the staff is and how great our custodolan's crestmers are and how much fun our bands are. That said, our busiest day of the year is coming up on Tuesday, March 17th. This is, simply put, the most fantastic day of the year for our pub. The doors open, we’re full within 5 minutes and the room is in an uproar full of laughs and smiles and beautiful old traditional Irish tunes and then the pints start flowing. It’s a beautiful thing to see and brings a tear to me glass eye. Although historically, the day is for the Irish, it really crosses cultural and language barriers as we have customers from every continent usually.

The doors open at 11AM on St. Patrick’s Day, music starts at 1PM until close with Barry’s Privateers and The Frequency taking the stage to entertain the throngs of people who will descend on the Pub decked out in their shamrocks, green beards, leprechaun outfits, etc.

If you could have absolutely anyone in the world play your bar (dead or alive) who would you have?
That is too tough to answer but I guess since it’s an Irish pub and I’m an emotional, Irish-Canadian guy, I’d love to have a band that exemplifies everything Ireland so in that case, I’d have to say “The Chieftains

There you have it folks! Plenty of reasons to frequent Dolan’s Pub for St. Patrick’s Day and every other day of the year!

reNeu Boutique – February’s featured venue

reNeu

reNeu Boutique, 359 King St

Do you know where in the city you can go to enjoy live music if you are not yet 19 years of age? Options appear to be limited so I want to bring your attention to reNeu Boutique. This locally-owned consignment boutique is located in Fredericton’s downtown Tannery. Heather Ogilvie opened in July 2006 and as the owner she is involved with all aspects of the business which employs 2 part-time staff. Their modest space is full of great finds from retro to modern, used & new as well as altered & handmade. Be sure to check out their selection!

What might not be so well known is the fact they also feature live music on a regular basis. Once I found out Heather also plays in a couple local bands – Shorty Tubbs and Pastel Skeleton – the connection seemed obvious. She answered a few questions to fill me in on how things have come together….

Why do you feel it is important to offer the live music experience at reNeu Boutique?
Well, there’s a real lack of consistent all-ages venues in Fredericton. At this moment, it’s down to us and Gallery Connexion. If most emerging live music happens in a bar setting, where are kids going to be inspired to get involved, and play? I can’t say this for sure…but the lack of first-hand experience probably hinders the growth of a local music scene.

How long have you been presenting live music?
I started off pretty soon after opening – our first show was in March of 2007 (Great Plains, Slate Pacific, and Wesley Allen Simpson). At the time, I was sharing booking and hosting duties with my partner at the time, Kyle Cunjak. Both of us being involved in the scene already, and having this space unused most evenings – it was a no-brainer. When he left town, I pulled back a bit to focus on the shop. But…I missed it…and have been hosting several shows a month for the last few years.

How do you decide who to book?
Most shows here involve a touring band or two, and I build a bill around them. This city is a perfect pit stop between Halifax and Montreal, and we see a lot of acts coming through on off-nights looking to play. Because I can only manage a small number of shows, really…they feature bands I like. I guess that’s a benefit of being a pop-up venue of sorts – I can be choosy.

The Famines

The Famines

How has the response been?
It’s a different sort of experience than a bar show, and people appreciate that! I suppose it’s more like a concert…people are super respectful and here to actually watch music. There seems to be an easy exchange between audience and performer, too. There’s no stage here; it’s a small space. Everyone’s on the same level. You can interact with the bands between sets, converse…it’s pretty great.

Do you get good attendance?
Attendance fluctuates…we’ve been packed and next to dead. It depends on what else is happening. Realistically, we’re a small city and the scene can’t support everything. There are a lot of regular show-goers, and they are a dedicated crew. But I’d love to see more people make it out to shows. It’s not an exclusive thing! And our events start at 8 or 9pm versus 11 …so it’s possible to school or work the next day.

What is your schedule?
We aim for two shows a month right now. Saturdays are definitely the eve of choice, but scheduling really depends on the demand from bands.

Walrus

Walrus

Which shows stand out as something special?
That’s tough…so many stand outs! A creepy Ghost Bees set (twin sisters sitting and eerily eye-locked). The Lonely Parade…proficient, young and all-female…they showed up everyone. Calgary’s Viet Cong about a year & a half ago…they’re now playing huge festivals. More recently a show headlined by Monomyth with a special set by Quaker Parents (one of my fav Halifax bands) ’cause they happened to be in town. I think the craziest show (barring a Shifty Bits Circus afterparty) was Apollo Ghosts, Dog Day and a band I played in, Slate Pacific. The crowd swelled outside at one point, along with Apollo Ghosts’ front man. Who was wearing a cape.

Do you have a favourite artist/band you like to present?
I like to diversify programming if I can; keep things fresh. New and/or underage local bands are always a consideration. I tend towards a certain musical aesthetic…more rock than folk (the space kinda dictates this…stand up rather than sit down shows). I’m into a lot of what’s coming out of Saint John, Sackville & Halifax right now. And Calgary.

What is your upcoming schedule? What can people expect to see at reNeu in 2015?
Our next confirmed show is March 28 – a couple of Sackville acts, Klarka Weinwurm, Old Bones…and local Sam Salmon (Brydon Crain of Motherhood fame). I’ve got some interesting things in the works, but nothing I can announce just yet.

I love knowing more about what’s happening in the city and I tip my hat to Heather for bringing music to her unique venue to provide everyone the opportunity to experience live music up-close and personal. I’m sure she likely is fostering the spirits of future musicians who will continue to grow the scene as she suggested!

As always I encourage you all to get out and support live music as well as local business!

Music Venue of the month – Mama’s Pub

We have the running calendar available on the site here and like to keep you in the know on the live music happening in and around the city. As an added feature we want to bring your attention to the various music venues and highlight one a month. First up is Mama’s Pub! It’s a good place to start because they are getting the new year underway with an increased focus to bringing live music to Fredericton’s northside.Mama's Pub

Mama’s Pub is located in the West Hills Village Plaza just off Brookside Drive across from the Brookside Mall. It has been in operation over 20 years and many of you will remember it’s Main Street location before their move approximately 8 years ago. The pub has long been known for tasty wings and excellent burgers. Current owners Pat Campbell and Brad Cain have long been supporting live music by providing a stage for many local bands over the years. Who remembers the Hardcore Troubadours? We approached Brad with the following questions to give us an idea of what they have in mind:

1. Why do you feel it is important to offer the live music experience at Mama’s Pub?
Pat and I want to program entertainment both to provide opportunity for new customers to come through our doors and to give the northside residents a place to enjoy live music and hang out with their friends.

2. How long have you been presenting live music? How do you decide who to book?
We just started booking live bands again in the last few months. We are open to all genres – doesn’t matter, rock, country, soul, you name it! We want to provide the best quality acts, such as Sugarbomb, who are amazing at what they do.

3. How do your patrons respond?keith at mama's
Patron response is quite positive and we’ve had requests for more.

4. What is your schedule?
We have Keith Hallett every Wednesday night and are trying to fill every Saturday night with great local bands.

5. Which shows stand out as something special?
I think having Keith as part of our regular line up is quite special. This guy is the real deal!

6. Do you have a favourite artist/band you like to present?
As previously mentioned,we have just started booking a few months ago and so far I’ve enjoyed every act

sugarbomb poster_mamasYou can see Keith Hallett plays every Wednesday night starting at 8:30 and
this Saturday night (January 10th) the Pub will be filled with the Soul & Motown sounds of Sugarbomb

The following bands have been confirmed for the next few Saturday nights :
Jan 17th – Dapper Dan & the Drive In Classics  (Rock-a-Billy with a hint of Bluegrass)
Jan 24th – The Big Easy
Jan 31st – Hazzard
Feb 7th – 8 Track Mind (Retro Pop/Rock)

Be sure to check back on Mama’s Facebook page by clicking here to see who else will be taking the stage over the coming months.

Whether you live on the northside, or you are looking for a good excuse to get yourself over to the northside, make your plans to stop by Mama’s Pub and support live music!
