SUMMARY:Terra Spencer\, Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Is Nova Scotian funeral director-turned-songwriter Terra Spencer “the Canadian Carole King”? Sunset\, her upcoming fourth solo album\, makes a strong case for it. Rich with the ‘70s wood-paneled warmth of the records she discovered in her grandparents’ basement\, Sunset will make its debut in fall 2024 with a list of cross-Canada solo tour dates. The album features a host of Canadian stars from coast to coast (Stephen Fearing\, Ian Sherwood\, and Matt Andersen are on the roster) performing the signature heart-charged songs that have endeared Terra to audiences and fellow artists alike. Fresh from touring with folk icon David Francey after contributing to his Juno-winning album The Breath Between\, Terra brings her deft fingerstyle guitar\, church bench piano\, and butterscotch voice to the stage\, mixed with East Coast charm\, innate storytelling\, and disarming wit. \n“The real deal” – Ron Sexsmith

SUMMARY:Leeroy Stagger
DESCRIPTION:Waking up at ungodly hours would kick the shit out of most of us. But if you’re Leeroy Stagger\, you breathe. You pick up a guitar. And you greet the coming dawn with words\, music\, and grace. \n“Most of these songs were composed in the wee hours of a new day. The witching hours\, you could call them. Where my mind is active and there’s a peace and spirit I embrace in the quiet of life.” \nThat liminal space is exactly what Stagger would call his 3 AM Revelations—and there could be no better title for his 13th full recording. For it’s in that sacred and moonlit window that brought forth his strongest\, most passionate songwriting to date. \nIn these musical revelations—recorded in Stagger’s new Victoria home studio made of “beautiful rough-cut wood”—we hear gratitude\, struggle\, rebel rousing\, balladry\, compassion\, and humour. We go to worlds as small as the back of lousy Dodge Dart\, and worlds as vast as the Alberta Skies and as ethereal as human connection. \n“This is a record of the human spirit. Of suffering and joy. Of heroes and everyday stories. And of addiction and redemption.”

SUMMARY:Rory Taillon Live in Fredericton
DESCRIPTION:Rory returns to Fredericton Aug 28th\, for a special one night only performance at The Muse. **Note the 8:30 start time. \nOttawa singer/songwriter Rory Taillon has gigged from coast to coast a number of times\, and those who have witnessed one of his past Fredericton stops will tell you\, he’s not just an entertainer—he’s a true\, and proven\, performer. When Rory Taillon sings\, and delivers with his trademark power and passion\, the world around him stops to listen. It’s just that simple. \n“His croon enters your cocoon and he asks questions maybe others are asking as the drifting lulls us; the Whys of this time; in the case of Rory\, the whys of touring\, of writing\, recording\, the value of song\, of life as an artist. And yet the value lies in his voice quietening those other voices\, squeezing them out. Contemplating his doubt overcomes our doubt. In his voice we hear possibility\, in his doubt we hear hope.” – SlowCity.ca

SUMMARY:Paul Campbell - It's All About the Love
DESCRIPTION:Paul Campbell\, known to many Frederictonians as an entertainer who has been bringing crowds to the dance floor for decades\, has never considered himself a songwriter. However\, with the chaotic political climate of recent years\, he felt the need to complete his one and only attempt; a song he started to write while vacationing abroad in 1976. It’s now finished\, and in a move that’s very ‘on-brand’ for Campbell\, he has scheduled a celebration in its honor.\nSong For Democracy-1984 Redux finally gets its official debut on Saturday\, June 1st at the Charlotte Street Arts Center\, at the 5th Downtown Blues Band ‘Party For The Planet’. The band will perform two sets\, along with a special video presentation of the new song\, which will be preceded by a brief recorded interview with Campbell\, conducted by MRTI’s Rob Pinnock. The final song of the evening will be Song For Democracy-1984 Redux performed live for the first time in front of an audience.\nAs the long-time front man for Fredericton’s favourite party band\, the Downtown Blues Band\, Campbell has always chosen to keep things non-political\, but Song For Democracy-1984 Redux is Campbell’s anthem of love and hope in a world he feels is heading in the wrong direction for humanity.\nInspired by 1984\, George Orwell’s frightening look into the future\, and set in a totalitarian world\, Campbell seeks out the light of humanity in the form of LOVE\, and calls it out from the darkness as the song rises to its thrilling\, emotional peak.\nTickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Net proceeds will be donated to the purchase of supplies needed to help those displaced by the war in the Ukraine.\nPRESALE for CSAC Members on NOW and general sale will start Monday March 4th.\nDoors open at 7:00PM with show at 7:30PM.

SUMMARY:Ross Neilsen
DESCRIPTION:Ross Neilsen makes his return to Fredericton for a live show at Dolan’s Pub\, his first in the city since 2022. The evening will take on an extra celebratory feel\, considering the friends\, fans and memories attached to Fredericton for Neilsen\, who is now based in Saskatoon (SK).\nNeilsen is a proven road warrior\, who crossed the country and back many times\, both as a solo artist\, and with his backing band The Sufferin’ Bastards dating back to 2010. Neilsen’s music has not only traveled him all over Canada\, but he’s also taken his distinct ‘finger-style’ of playing to Mexico\, to the fabled blues grounds of the Hill Country region of Mississippi\, the bayous of Louisiana and even to Macon\, Georgia where he was awarded the privilege of playing the holy grail of blues\, rock and soul: Duane Allman’s 1957 Les Paul Gold Top.\nIn 2012 Ross was chosen as a semi-finalist in the solo/duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis\, TN and in 2014\, he studied at Camp Copperhead under the tutelage of Steve Earle.\nIn early 2016\, Neilsen returned to the studio to cut his sixth studio album with Juno winning team\, producer Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) and ace engineer\, Ken Friesen (Tragically Hip\, Blue Rodeo). Elemental was released in September of 2016 and received much critical appraise and airplay support from all over the world.\nIn more recent years\, Neilsen had paused his career to start a family\, and of course the pandemic played its part too\, but now he is set to rekindle his career\, and a trip home to ‘Freddy Beach’ as the weather starts to warm sounds like a great night out.\nTickets are $20 advance or $25 at the door. SUMMARY:David Francey
DESCRIPTION:JUNO AWARD WINNING FOLK SINGER STOPS IN FREDERICTON THIS MAY\n“David Francey’s clear\, simple songs speak volumes to his followers. David is known as one of Canada’s finest tunesmiths and a champion of the ‘Everyman’\, admired for his less is more approach to writing. It’s amazing how he manages to address the deep stuff with such spare ingredients.” –The Edmonton Journal\n\nDavid Francey makes a return to Fredericton for his first stop in the capital city in over 10 years on May 1st 2024\, for a much anticipated performance at The Charlotte Street Arts Centre.\n\nFrancey is a folk singer in the truest form. Born in Scotland\, but arriving in Canada at the age of 12\, Francey’s life was very much shaped by the experiences of living\, travelling and eventually working in the adopted country he now called his home. His style\, although on the surface coming off as simple and minimal\, packs a great deal of depth.\n\nA traveller\, an observer\, and a man of the people\, Francey’s songs are crafted through experience and his natural gift for storytelling. In his younger years\, Francey worked farms\, rail yards and the wilds of Canada’s north as a journeyman laborer\, all the while collecting the experiences and characters that make up the backbone of his extensive body of work.\n\nIn terms of writing music\, Francey arrived on the scene a little later in life than many of his contemporaries did. David’s debut Torn Screen Door came out in 1999\, while he was in his 40’s\, but since then he has wasted little time\, releasing 12 albums\, picking up three JUNO awards and having his music covered by the likes of The Rankin Family and the Del McCourey Band among others. Francey also picked up the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award\, as well as taking home the grand prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award.

SUMMARY:Theresa Malenfant & Scott Medford (Saint John)
DESCRIPTION:ECMA winner Theresa Malenfant and renowned guitarist Scott Medford have become one of the most popular blues duo acts in the Atlantic Provinces. They have been performing together in a band for years\, but decided to work as a duo only 6 years ago. In that short time they managed to win second place in an International Blues Challenge (IBC) held in Memphis Tennessee. \nTheresa and Scott have an intuitive way of working with each other\, and the mutual respect and admiration for the other’s abilities is evident from their stage performance. \nTheresa Malenfant has earned the nickname “Queen Bee of the Blues”. When you hear the first note you’ll know why. And she personally selected Scott Medford to be her guitarist. That speaks volumes about his level of playing. \nAn incredible evening of music you’ll not soon forget!

Her Little Girl Blue album\, featuring songs originally recorded by Janis Joplin\, was awarded nominations for Female Artist of the Year at The Maple Blues Awards in 1997 and 1998. This was followed by five years in Europe where her fan base grew to include strong followings in Belgium and Holland. Theresa’s career in the 2000’s has included more awards and nominations\, and more well received recordings\, including a ‘Best Of’ release and a live album. In 2015 she was awarded Lifetime Achievement at Maple Blues Awards and in 2019 she and Scott Medford won second place at the IBC International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee.\n\nIf you like hearing the blues coming from deep inside an artist’s soul\, you will be captivated by the force and passion of a Theresa Malenfant performance.\n\n* THANK YOU to our sponsors THE FREDERICTON INN

SUMMARY:Saltwater Songs
DESCRIPTION:With Saltwater Songs\, Catherine MacLellan\, Rachel Beck\, and Cassie & Maggie are joining forces to present a brand new songwriters’ circle. These three East Coast acts will share the stage for a collaborative evening of entertainment\, including original folk\, pop\, and Americana\, as well as traditional fiddle tunes and step dance. \nCatherine MacLellan is a JUNO award winner\, ECMA songwriter of the year\, and has released 7 albums over the past 20 years while touring around the world. She is an acclaimed folk songwriter\, whose music often draws on traditional East Coast instrumentation: accordions\, fiddles\, and bouzouki. \nRachel Beck is an indie pop songwriter whose dreamy vocals wash over you\, as the waves lap the shores of her beloved Prince Edward Island. Her ethereal 2020 release\, “Stronger Than You Know\,” was celebrated as Music PEI’s Album of the Year and nominated for three ECMAs. It followed the soaring success of Beck’s debut single\, “Reckless Heart”\, which earned the #1 spot on the national CBC Music Top 20 Chart and was subsequently named one of the Top 100 Canadian Songs of 2018. \n2018 JUNO nominees\, Nova Scotian sisters Cassie and Maggie are putting their own 21st Century stamp on the Celtic soundtrack of this nation. Exciting and innovative\, their talent is surpassed only by the sheer joy they exude in performance. Alternating between Gaelic and English\, traditional and contemporary\, haunting and electrifying\, the duo is nothing short of mesmerizing. \nMusic Runs Through It is pleased to be a partner in this presentation. \nSaltwater Songs – False False – Catherine MacLellan\, Rachel Beck\, Cassie & Maggie

SUMMARY:Connor Fox & Logan Richard (Fredericton)
DESCRIPTION:Connor Fox (Hypochondriacs) and Logan Richard have scheduled a few New Brunswick dates to bring awareness to their respective abilities as two of the Maritimes brightest young guitarists and song writers. Two stools\, two guitars and two massive talents in one amazing show.\nFox has been playing since he was old enough to hold a guitar\, but that was merely his apprenticeship. In more recent years has turned heads in the role of lead guitarist for the extremely popular live act\, The Hypochondriacs. Outside of that\, Connor has begun to flex his talents in order to realize his own songwriting abilities with the release of his debut album\, Music Room\, which not only highlights his delightfully varied approach to the guitar\, but also showcases his vocal chops\, which get stronger with every performance.\nRichard launched as a solo artist in 2017\, when he was still a teenager. More recently\, this three time Music PEI Award winner and ECMA nominee\, has taken his profile to the next level with support from both CBC Radio 1 and 2\, and hitting one million streams on Spotify. His latest EP\, Learning To Love (2023) showcases a more mature\, reflective side of his songwriting. Richards talents have made him a sough-after session\, and live\, guitar player capable of working everything from the blues\, to pop\, to indie rock.\nTickets are $20 advance\, $25 at the door.\nIt’s gonna be mind blowing!

One of the most influential singer-songwriters of all time\, Mitchell’s career spans half a century\, and each of her albums is a universe in itself; audiences will almost certainly have heard of her 1971 record Blue\, which NPR put at the top of its 2017 list of Greatest Albums Made by Women. SUMMARY:Connor Fox - Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:The Hypochondriacs guitarist\, Connor Fox will be fronting his own band at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on February 29th\, in support of his debut release\, Music Room. A show that the young guitarist was quick to observe\, ‘could only happen once every four years’.\nForming into words\, some worthy points of praise to illuminate the unique talents of this young slinger can be a humbling exercise. In the search for the colorful verbiage that does him proper justice\, the praise tends to careen off into embarrassingly gushy territory. However\, make no mistake\, it’s all true.\nAs a musician Fox comes armed with a lot of tools in his belt–yes\, he has the ability to shred with the best of them\, but also\, when needed\, he can maturely shift to playing in the moment\, giving whatever is required of him. His seasoned tastes and sense of subtlety betray someone of only 23 years of age\, but Connor comes across as wise\, both in his demeanor and his guitar playing\, which he has been doing since he was old enough to hold one. Stylistically\, whether it’s capturing the fire and passion of a Stevie Ray Vaughn solo or the nuanced\, creative impulses of Jerry Garcia\, his two primary influences\, Connor is a force.\nSince 2019\, Connor has been developing his chops as lead guitarist for one of the Maritimes favourite live bands\, The Hypochondriacs.\nThis opportunity has not only given Connor the chance to hone his craft\, but also play major stages as close to home as Fredericton’s Harvest Music Festival\, and as fabled as Austin’s SXSW. It also allowed him to ride shotgun during their songwriting process. It’s safe to say that he took a lot of notes\, because this fall marked the release of Connor’s solo debut—the album we celebrate on Feb 29th.\nWhile remaining a member of The Hypochondriacs\, but taking advantage of some downtime\, Connor earnestly began working on the material that would make up Music Room; a set of songs that would represent his creativity as a songwriter up until the present\, some of the material dating back to when he was first learning the instrument.\n‘I really went into this with little\, or no\, expectations–I just wanted to get those songs out there\, and get the ball rolling\,’ added Connor.\nMusic Room is a sprawling 10 song effort\, which throws light toward his wide range of influences and styles\, but what has many people talking\, is the strength of Connor’s vocals. He not only performs and produces the tracks that make up the album\, he confidently delivers vocals to the effort as well.

SUMMARY:Whitehorse
DESCRIPTION:Canadian rock band Whitehorse is unafraid to mix genres\, regularly dipping into psychedelic Americana\, pop noir\, squalling blues rock\, and celestial folk. The partnership of Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet\, Whitehorse has pushed their eccentric musical identity into new realms and sounds for over a decade. With five consecutive JUNO Award nominations in three different genre categories\, and seven full-length records to their name\, it’s clear these rockers do a lot of different things\, and do them well. \nHusband-and-wife duo McClelland and Doucet were already individually established as singer-songwriters when they came together to form Whitehorse. Based in Hamilton\, Ontario\, both are masterful guitar players and multi-instrumentalists. On their new record I’m Not Crying\, You’re Crying\, Whitehorse venture deeper into classic country music touchstones than ever before\, a move that is both a homecoming and an evolution of their sound. The songs are playful yet profound\, masterfully simple and timeless. \nMusic Runs Through It is pleased to be a partner in this presentation.

SUMMARY:Garrett Mason in Saint John
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, Garrett Mason carries the soulful\, blues lineage that is rightfully attached to his family name. As the son of Dutch Mason\, a man affectionately known as the ‘Prime Minister of Canadian Blues’\, understandably there is an expected level of excellence that would be fused to his musical progeny. It comes with the territory.\n\nFortunately Garrett not only delivers on that promise\, but musically he takes it to another level all together. As a solo artist\, Garrett has been forging his own legend as one of the most exciting musicians in Canada…period\, and is widely recognized as an innovator on the guitar. Combine his skills not only as a musician\, but as a gifted songwriter as well\, and it’s easy to understand why so many are raving about Garrett Mason’s live show. It is a complete thrill ride.\n\nThere are many guitarists\, who consider Garrett their favorite guitarist. Come out to see why. If it’s your first Garrett Mason show\, it won’t be your last.
